Reggie Dawson Memorial Math Tournament

The seventh annual Reggie Dawson Memorial Math Tournament was located at Statesboro High School on April 28, 2018.  More than 100 third and fourth-grade students competed both individually and as part of third-grade and fourth-grade teams.

The Reggie Dawson Memorial Math Tournament was named for a former Statesboro High School educator whose life and career were cut tragically short when he lost his battle with cancer in 2010.  Local math teachers wanted to honor his memory and the excellent example he set for team work and academic excellence by naming the tournament in his memory.

Julia P. Bryant Elementary School’s Math Department founded the tournament and organizes the event, which is open to teams from any public, private or home schools in Bulloch County.  The Bulloch County Foundation for Public Education has sponsored the tournament since its formation with annual innovation grants of $1,000.

5th grade Penny Sikes Math Tournament

The Penny Sikes Math Tournament is open to fifth and sixth-grade students from all of Bulloch County's public, private and home schools. Students compete individually and in team ciphering events. The event is organized and hosted by the Southeast Bulloch High School Math Department. The 36th Annual Penny Sikes Mathematics Tournament took place on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Southeast Bulloch High School. Penny Sikes is a former Bulloch County Schools math teacher and administrator, who began the tournament in 1983, with an innovation grant from the school system. The tournament is one of three local math competitions held annually.
